Finding Contentment in Discontent

Jesus never said life was going to be easy, in fact He tells us that we will experience trials. In John 16:33 Jesus declares, “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” Here Christ was talking to His disciples, He was telling them they were going to face many trials, but they would not be alone. He is declaring our troubles to be victorious through Him. We can claim peace in Christ when faced with any situation.

Sometimes we say, “but you don’t understand, my problems are something you’ll never be able to understand.” And you’re probably right, I as a human will never know the exact thing you are feeling, because I am created differently, as you are different from me. But one thing I am certain of is that Christ understands it. Every bit of the bad, every bit of the good, He gets it because He overcame it on the cross. Though you may be experiencing something I cannot fathom, be in full confidence that you have a mighty warrior who overcame it already for you. He is right by your side, and with your life fully surrendered to Him, you are unstoppable. No situation or circumstance can hold you back from the season of contentment He has for you.

The other night my roommate and I were in conversation and she simply told me something incredibly profound, “Carmen, often times we fight with God and get upset because we don’t like how life is going. We see things going so wrong and we keep asking Him to change it. But if our life is truly surrendered to Him, then everything is going right. In our eyes everything is going so wrong, but because we are believers it is all going perfect in Gods eyes.” I couldn’t agree more. We pray for God to change our circumstances so often that we forget His plan. I am probably the guiltiest person of this. I want God to change a situation or season He has me in so much so that I forget that He has me exactly where He wants me. I’m not saying everything is going to be perfect all the time, in fact I know Satan is going to come in at any opportunity He can to say everything is going horrible, but in Christ you can declare against that. You see, Christ allows us to go through those trials and seasons of discontentment because He knows that you are strong enough to overcome it. And once overcoming that situation there is such a season of contentment waiting for you. The nearness of God after overcoming a battle with discontentment is incredible.

I am so reminded of this through Romans 5:3-5 which says, “We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.” All I can say is that brings me so much peace. Knowing that whatever I may be experiencing is building me up for a better purpose and allowing me to persevere through that builds who I am as a person.

Don’t allow Satan to creep into the doorway Christ has open. Things are going to go wrong always, that’s life. But ultimately you are in full control of how you handle it or what the outcome is.We all deal with being discontent. It’s a season many of you are either currently in or currently overcoming. Though the Lord allows us to experience that season, it’s to draw is more near to His comfort. God doesn’t wish it upon you for everything to go wrong. Instead He wants the complete opposite for your life. He wants you to prosper. But only if you are fully surrendered to Him will you find that contentment and prosperity.

I hope this encouraged some of you and feel free to share your thoughts! This is my first blog, so stick with me as I write about what the Lord puts on my heart to share with you guys!
